Quantum HR enhances HR efficiency through technology integration, managing transformation projects, and providing ongoing support

As organisations move into 2026, Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs) face growing pressure to balance growth, efficiency and shifting workforce expectations in an increasingly AI-driven environment. Gartner ’s 2026 HR Priorities research highlights four critical focus areas that will define effective HR leadership in the year ahead.
Harnessing AI to revolutionise HR is the first priority. AI is no longer simply an efficiency tool; it is becoming a viable alternative to human talent for many transactional activities. The greatest productivity gains come from redesigning the HR operating model itself, repositioning HR business partners as strategic talent leaders, transforming centres of excellence into HR product designers, and using digital HR solutions to automate routine services.
The second priority is to shape work for the human–machine era. CHROs must develop a clear “now–next” talent strategy that delivers immediate impact while preparing for the next one to three years. This includes planning for blended human and AI workforces, investing in distinctive capabilities, and managing dual performance measures that balance short-term outcomes with long-term value.
Third, organisations must mobilise leaders for growth in an uncertain world. Successful transformation depends on leaders who can make change a routine, not simply inspire it. When change becomes a natural part of everyday work, adoption rates significantly improve. Leaders must also be equipped to manage emotional responses and build practical change capabilities within their teams.
Finally, CHROs need to address culture atrophy to power performance. Organisational culture can experience drift when it is not in the focus of a strategy. Embedding organisational values into daily processes and behaviours can drive substantial performance gains. Employees must clearly understand expected behaviours and see values consistently reflected in how work is done.
Together, these priorities mark a clear shift for HR from operational support to strategic leadership at the intersection of people, technology and performance. CHROs who act decisively now will be best placed to lead their organisations confidently into the future of work.
